As we slowly but surely enter the second month of 2022, there are shedloads of great things to do in and around Manchester that won’t hurt your wallet at all. From quirky art exhibitions to wholesome gardening workshops—we’ve got something for just about everybody this week.
Here’s the rundown…
All about getting city slickers a bit more hands-on with gardening and ecology, head to Sadler’s Yard this Saturday for a cracking workshop all about creepy crawlies. Featuring all the mini-beasts from slugs to woodlice to grubs—this workshop will teach you all about the ways we can use these little critters to benefit our gardens.
Perfect for families and anyone a bit eco-conscious, get stuck into the city’s ecology and explore the abundant nature that it has to offer.
Get yourself over to the Ruslan Faraev Institute of Art for some exciting live painting by Tom Burbidge, Manchester-based contemporary abstract painter. All about using small pieces of art to create a larger meaning, this exhibition acts as a fascinating inside look into the process behind the connection between work and artist.
An opportunity to witness for yourself the sensation of painting within the studio atmosphere, this is sure to be unlike any regular exhibition.
Looking for something a little more wholesome? This brilliant workshop based in the Old Trafford Wellbeing Centre is a brilliant place to start. Whether you learn techniques to help with mental clarity, share through simple writing exercises or listen to the group to feel connected to your community, this workshop is sure to sort you right out.
A supportive and encouraging safe space to connect, reflect and learn—this workshop brought to you by Joy Ethic is a lovely way to break up the week and help you carve out a little time to just relax, chill out and take it easy.
Join the lovely lot at HOME’s Young Identity for a Monday evening screening of three short indie films created by Young Identity poets, the finalists of the BBC Words First 2020 Competition. Featuring the works of Nine McCartney, P.A. Bitez and Jardel Rodrigues—these accomplished poets are sure to move you.
Followed by an engaging Q+A discussion and creative writing session, this is a great way to try your hand at poetry and immerse yourself in the city’s buzzing spoken word scene.

Head to the Northern Quarter stalwart, Cass Art, this week for a glimpse at Mike Roberts’ delightfully quirky art exhibition. Based out of Timperley, this is a great opportunity to show some support to the local arts scene whilst checking out the flamboyant nostalgia that Roberts’ art evokes.
With thirty paintings on display and many allusions to Manchester’s very own Canal Street, see for yourself the incredible use of colour, eccentric characters and stunning linework.
