Carlo Rizzi, Conductor Laureate of Welsh National Opera and a firm favourite whenever he takes to The Hallé stage returns to the Bridgewater Hall this week.
Audiences will have three chances to catch Mahler’s Titan, with performances taking place on Wed 9 Feb (2.15pm), Thu 10 Feb (7.30pm) and Sun 13 Feb (4pm).
The show opens with a brand new piece to The Hallé—Stravinsky’s tribute to his teacher Rimsky-Korsakov which was lost for over a century following its premiere.
Another Hallé favourite returns in Sofya Gulyak, playing Shostakovich’s Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings, in which she’ll be joined by the orchestra’s principal trumpet, Gareth Small.
Callbacks to Beethoven, Haydn and Shostakovich himself appear throughout the programme before proceedings come to a spectacular conclusion, as Mahler’s signature Titan reflects his view that a symphony must embrace the world.
