At long last, the weather is looking up and St. Patrick’s Day is upon us. To help you make the most of it, there are still plenty of free things going on in and around the city over the next seven days.
From The Lowry’s all-new digital platform to indie film screenings to public protest lectures—we have something for literally everybody this week.
Kicking off the first of six community sessions run by Manchester Pride is Girl Gang over at the People’s History Museum. The sessions are all about shining a very much-deserved spotlight on the brilliant grassroots organisations of the city that make an active effort to support intersectional LGBTQ+ communities.
A great opportunity to learn about the admirable work of Girl Gang, and with refreshments provided, this is a lovely way to celebrate the amazing community work of the city and meet the incredible collective full of female artists, activists, academics, party instigators and beyond.
Going down at one of the coolest joints in Whalley Range is Pete Obsolete’s exhibition, WE ARE ALL SKELETONS. Get yourself over to the stunning green room of the Carlton Club to see a whole load of doodles, drawings, sketches and prints of all things skeletal.
With some great local craft beers and cask ale, a pop-up shop and even better chat on offer—all are welcome at this iconic social club. Support the local arts, grab a bev and get yourself ready for that Friday feeling a little earlier than planned.
For the third of their open sessions, Jez Dolan has worked in collaboration with Short Supply to explore the current Derek Jarman exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery. Led by life-long diary keeper, Joshua Val Martin will use Jarman’s published diaries, Modern Nature and Smiling in Slow Motion, to explore why we bother keeping a diary and who we keep them for?
While all materials will be provided, be sure to bring along any other bits and bobs that you’d like to use for your own writing.
If you fancy some old-school public lecturing then be sure to get to Carpenters Lane this weekend for a superb site-specific and temporary public lecture exploring disobedience, complicity and public resistance.
WILL YOU MARRY ME? cleverly explores the boundaries between what is legal and what is illegal, concepts of complicity, the act of public disobedience and how these all intersect together. Definitely not your average Saturday afternoon.
The Lowry have recently launched their brand-new digital platform ‘Lowry Digital’ where there are heaps of great free things you can check out all from the comfort of your home!
They’ve currently got three great short films available on-demand including My Last Duchess, an imaginative adaptation of Robert Browning’s 19th Century poem, Medea / Worn, an emancipatory call and expression of resistance via a singing wedding dress, and Skin Hunger on Film, all about the amazing power of touch.

Start off the working week with a free indie film screening over at GRUB on Cheetham Hill. Dubbed as one of Salford-based CODEC Productions’ biggest projects yet, Girl-Friend is all about falling in love with your best mate’s girlfriend at university.
A brilliant coming-of-age tale following summer romance, flings, and everything in between—this indie flick should definitely be on your radar. With food provided throughout the evening by EAT LIKE A GREEK—what’s not to love?
