Publishing events at The Portico: demystify the industry in an historic hub of Northern literature

In keeping with the Portico Library’s historic advocacy for literary access and diversity, their June schedule finishes with a pair of events aimed at dissecting the modern publishing landscape: ‘Pathways into Publishing’ enlightens visitors on the industry’s processes, challenges and means of entry, while ‘Into the Wilds’ spotlights an emerging Northern house which amplifies marginalised voices.

Taking place across nearly a full day on Saturday (25 Jun), ‘Pathways to Publishing’ calls on prospective artists, booksellers, publishes and writers of all disciplines to stop by for a relaxed yet illuminating set of talks from professionals across the publishing spectrum. Northern-based experts provide information and inspiration on everything including art, book design, writing, editing and pitching in a ‘modern market-style atmosphere’ beneath the Portico dome.

On Tuesday (28 Jun), the Portico welcomes Bradford-based publishing newcomers Fox and Windmill for an evening of storytelling from Into the Wilds, a new anthology of poetry and short stories from British South Asian writers. Part of the Arts Council England-funded series Rewriting the North, the event features remarkable work from decorated poets and authors as part of a growingly impressive oeuvre from Fox and Windmill, who have been shortlisted for multiple awards in just a year of trading.
