Two behemoths of classical music come together this autumn, as The Bridgewater Hall welcomes the legendary London Philharmonic Orchestra on Sat 8 Oct.
Renowned conductor Edward Gardner brings the resurgent LPO for their first Manchester concert under his direction, with a star turn from one of the country’s leading pianists, Benjamin Grosvenor.
Grosvenor is the soloist in Felix Mendelssohn’s First Piano Concerto – a wondrous display by a 22-year-old composer overflowing with innovative ideas and jaw-dropping talent.
The evening begins with Tchaikovsky’s dramatic symphonic poem, Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture, inspired by the greatest love story ever told. To close proceedings is one of British music’s best-loved pieces, Enigma Variations – Elgar’s sparkling homage ‘to my friends pictured within’, 14 portraits of pals, lovers, colleagues, pupils and the composer himself.
