As the summer months fade into the distance, Manchester’s food and drink scene will ensure there’s still plenty to keep us feeling upbeat throughout the coming weeks.
From Japanese desserts and the return of a Manchester icon, to the 25th anniversary of Manchester Food and Drink Festival, there’s loads to get stuck into…
Japanese tea and dessert specialists, Tsujiri, have opened their second Manchester spot, becoming the latest addition to the thriving Circle Square development just off Oxford Road.
The new opening follows the success of their Chinatown venue, and will specialise in a variety of teas, matcha flavoured soft serve ice creams and sundaes and matcha Basque cheesecake. They’ll also sell bags of matcha for customers to enjoy at home.
Nell’s latest special is tailored perfectly to those battling the eternal struggle of being unable to decide whether they want a burger or pizza.
The exquisitely named McDoughNells channels McDonald’s most iconic menu item, taking the flavours made famous by the Big Mac and spreading them across a mouthwatering Nell’s pie.
Vegan-friendly, the September special features shredded vegan burger patty, vegan mozzarella, gherkin, red onion and lettuce, and is finished off with the restaurant’s own McDoughNell’s burger sauce.
A new 6,000sqft concept that combines three award-winning independent kitchens with two bars and dedicated exhibition space is set to take over the iconic St George’s House just off Peter Street.
Exhibition comes from the team behind Haunt, the thriving coffee shop and aperitivo bar also found on Peter Street, and promises to become a new ‘home for eclectic independent food, innovative drinks and boundary-pushing entertainment’.
While no concrete opening date has been set, Exhibition should be with us this autumn.
The Schofield’s success story seemingly goes from strength to strength in Manchester, as the cocktail pioneers prepare to open a brand new concept in the city.
Sterling—the latest creation by Joe and Daniel Schofield, alongside leading wine expert James Brandwood, will take over the lower ground floor previously known as ‘The Vault’ at Manchester’s Stock Exchange Hotel.
The spectacular space—which all things going according to plan should arrive this September—will become home to an exciting new cocktail bar, with an equally as impressive wine programme that reflects the history and glamour of this stunning building.
The 25th edition of Manchester Food and Drink Festival (MFDF) kicks off on Thu 15 Sep, and the festival have now unveiled a stacked lineup to mark the big milestone.
Cathedral Gardens which will be the centre of the action and home to The Festival Hub – a free-to-enter, pop-up food and drink village. Visitors can swing by the Manchester beer bar, chow down on an incredible host of street food, peruse an artisan food market, all to the soundtrack of live music.
The Hub will also be bringing together a host of incredible and eclectic street food fit for an anniversary Festival including Bab K, Herbivorous and Hip Hop Chip Shop.
Other highlights include the return of the smash-hit Curry Club happening at the Hub. Dishoom, The Little Sri Lankan, Aunty Jis, Nila’s Burmese Kitchen and Lily’s are just a few of the traders that will bring cuisines of India, Burma and Sri Lanka to the table.
The Festival Firepit will see some of the region’s best-loved chefs cooking over fire for a first-time festival feast on Cathedral Gardens. Chefs hosting the BBQ include Caroline Martins, founder of the Sao Paolo project, Robert Owen Brown and Francisco Martinez from Fazenda.

In what is no doubt one of the city’s most exciting openings of the year, the iconic New Century Hall has reopened as a new dining and event space.
While the whole redevelopment looks mightily impressive, the food front is particularly exciting. In total, six traders have taken up residence.
Authentic fresh sushi comes courtesy of Zumuku sushi, classically-trained chef Tom Lowe brings Tallow which has been inspired by the great steakhouses of hte UK and Europe, while NQ favourites PLY introduce their new pizza concept, Wild By Ply.
Plant-based favourites, Banh Vi, will be slinging their ever-popular Vietnamese and Thai-inspired creations, while 2021 British Street Food ‘People’s Choice’ winners, BaoBros23 bring their spectacular bao buns to Manchester for the first time.
Finally, Adam Reid, the chef patron at prestigious Manchester restaurant The French (The Midland) has launched The Butty Shop, which utilises classic Northern favourites built on memories of childhood visits to the bakery.
