A campaign for late-night trams across Greater Manchester has been launched

A campaign for trams to run through the night across Greater Manchester was tabled at a Salford City Council meeting this week (Wed 19 Oct).

Liberal Democrat councillors submitted the motion, asking for backing for their call for Metrolink trams to run until 2am through the week and until 4am at weekends.

The council meeting notes, which are available to view here, cites the popularity of the London Night Tube, which has been running since November 2021.

“Since Covid shuttered the world, our city has bounced back in a big way.  Gigs, restaurants, clubbing, and festivals have blossomed in the wake of the pandemic with millions flocking to Salford and Greater Manchester to pursue this entertainment.” The meeting notes read.

“If you are out working, or enjoying yourself late at night, residents face a curfew for the tram, expensive taxis, or a risky walk home in the dark.”

The motion proposes a three-month trial of a night tram running on the Eccles via Media City to Ashton-under-Lyne service, and to monitor its success and popularity.
