Lightwaves, a free interactive light trail returns to Salford Quays this December, showcasing a spectacular collection of digital artworks from an array of local, national and international artists.

Hosted by Quays Culture, the trail immerses audiences in new and exciting exhibitions that are inspired by its surroundings, with a focus on technology, creativity and digital innovation.

This year’s festival runs from Thu 1 Dec – Sun 4 Dec, providing a dramatic illuminated backdrop to the Quays. There is no need to book ahead, just turn up and wander along the trail, for which you can find a map here.

2022’s programme highlights include Navvies by Matthew Rosier, a new audio-visual installation that explores the role of the workers who built the Manchester Ship Canal, while Once We Were Water by idontloveyouanymore is a digitally recreated river that appears to flow over a bridge, reacting to the movement of people.

Studio Vertigo’s Our Beating Heart features dancing lights conjured by a heart-shaped mirror ball, while End Over End takes the shape of a giant illuminated slinky, tumbling into the shadows.
