Best friends and sometime pioneering musicians Norman Blake and Joe Pernice join forces for low-key collaboration The New Mendicants. What started off as chats in a local Toronto bar – the pair having found themselves as neighbours there – has progressed to Blake and Pernice working on a full-length album hopefully out later this year. As well as this new material, they also delve into each other’s extensive back catalogues – and when that contains bands such as Teenage Fanclub, Scud Mountain Boys, BMX Bandits and Pernice Brothers, that can only be a wonderful thing. The Glasgow-born Norman Blake and Massachusetts’ Joe Pernice have an easy-going rapport and their performances together are marked as much for their banter, open-tunings and sublime pop smarts as for their music.
