Bringing her mysterious, captivating sound to Depot Mayfield, MIF23 and the RNCM welcome pre-eminent composer and multi-instrumentalist Anna Meredith for a genre-bending rendition of her ‘infectious, joyous and exhilarating’ Mercury Prize-shortlisted album, FIBS, alongside the RNCM Festival Orchestra in a one-off spectacular on Sat 8 Jul.
As a composer, producer and performer, Anna has blazed a unique path through the orchestral world, commanding the stage with blistering performances from the Hollywood Bowl to the Last Night of the Proms.
Now, swapping concert halls for the cavernous drama of Depot Mayfield’s industrial expanse, Anna, her band and the RNCM Festival Orchestra blend contemporary classical, art pop, techno and experimental rock in a triumphant set featuring compositions from FIBS in new arrangements by Ben Corrigan and Robert Ames, promising ‘music made for a giant space’.
Guests are encouraged to arrive early for a specially selected set featuring some of the RNCM’s emerging classical-pop crossover artists, as the college celebrates five decades of sonic innovation. Hyperpop-artpop talent Norrisette brings an ‘electronic noise fest’ (BBC 6 Music), while thrilling Portuguese bassoonist Beatriz Carvalho performs Meredith’s rock-tinged Axeman.
The Talland Quartet, formed in 2022 with a shared desire to discover the balance between past traditions and future visions, perform Meredith’s swooping, energetic Tuggemo, before joining Molly Becker, a classical musician who blends jazz harmonies with soft-indie soundscapes, for a captivating recital of their intimate new EP, Magnolia.
