Potential plans for the future of Castlefield Viaduct could see it used as a bridge joining Pomona and Manchester’s city centre.
Consultations are currently ongoing between the National Trust and residents who live within a 5km vicinity of the viaduct on how the space can be best utilised in the future.
The viaduct reopened to the public in July 2022 in what was meant to be a year-long trial period. However, after welcoming more than 50,000 visitors, its opening has since been extended to autumn 2024.
Numerous plans are being discussed for the long-term future of the viaduct, with the bridge concept said to be a particularly popular one among respondents.
The National Trust website reads: “The aim is to connect the viaduct to Pomona Island in Salford, so there are two ways to get on and off the viaduct. Our hope for its future is that the viaduct brings even more benefits to people and nature in Manchester and to create an active travel route.”
The organisation also notes that funding will still be required before any of these plans can become a reality.
