Billed as a vast, tempestuous tale of angels, orphans and murderous machinations, the Olivier-and-Tony Award-nominated production of Coram Boy reimagines the acclaimed Jamila Gavin novel with a mesmerising stage play at The Lowry from Fri 21-Sat 29 Jun, and tickets in all seats are available for just £20 exclusively through Manchester Wire.
Set to a captivating score featuring original arrangements and iconic classical compositions, Helen Edmundson’s theatrical adaptation brings Georgian England to life with wondrously detailed depictions of both high society pageantry and a sinister urban underworld in the alleyways of London.
Coram Boy follows Alexander Ashbrook, an upstart heir to his family estate who yearns for a new life as a composer – against the wishes of his exacting father – and Meshak, son of the monstrous villain Otis Gardener, who targets young unmarried mothers with promises of safely delivering their babies to Coram’s Foundling Hospital, instead subjecting each child to a terrible fate.
Eight years later, their stories unexpectedly collide on the streets of London, where Coram orphans Toby and the prodigious young musician Aaron find themselves on parallel paths towards an irrevocably entangled destiny, while the virtuoso opera composer Handel progresses with a new score – the world-changing orchestral celebration of love, hope and triumph over evil, Messiah.
