With American politics very much at the forefront of the news cycle, the world premiere of legendary artist Laurie Anderson’s brand-new work ARK: United States Part V couldn’t come at a more apt time.

Best known for her multimedia performances and poetic use of technology, Anderson is celebrated as one of the world’s most pioneering creative artists. Boasting an unparalleled legacy spanning the worlds of art, theatre, film and music, she was recognised with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 Grammys.

Taking over Aviva Studios, the home of Factory International, from Tue 12 Nov – Sun 24 Nov, ARK marks Anderson’s most ambitious work to date. Described by Anderson herself as a ‘film, an installation and an opera’, it acts, in a way, as a new chapter in the story explored in her 80s multimedia epic, United States Parts 1-4.

Sprawling and non-linear in its narrative, United States Parts 1-4 examined the United States through four filters: transportation (or freedom of movement), politics, money and love, with an overarching exploration of how technology had become an extension of the self.

Fast forward to the present day, and with contributions from her collaborator and fellow artist Ai Weiwei, ARK throws fresh light on dark times to explore where we go from here, driven by themes of climate collapse, environmental disaster, and the proliferation of artificial intelligence.
