The football season is still slowly dribbling towards us and Wimbledon’s been and gone. The world of sport has been left with a summertime void, barely filled by cricket and the eccentric folk doing parkour off picnic benches. In the meantime there’s roller derby, an all-girl contact sport that, in its fast-paced ferocity, rivals any testosterone-filled equivalent. Local favourites Rainy City Roller Girls were set up in 2008, and a couple of years later they spawned their second team, the Tender Hooligans, who play at intermediate level. The Hooligans are taking on Newcastle Roller Girls’s B team The Whippin’ Hinnies at The Thunderdome in Oldham, marking the first time that the two teams have faced each other since 2011.
