Following its screening of Hip Hop classic Wild Style and Generation X retrospective 1991: The Year Punk Broke, Twisted Reel will be showing another music documentary, A Band Called Death, about the first black punk act – and arguably the first ever punk band – Death. Moving over the road from their home at The Castle to the larger Gullivers on Oldham Street, they will have more space for this showing ahead of it official UK release. It is the story of three teenage brothers in the early 70s who formed a band in their spare bedroom, began playing a few local gigs and even pressed a single – but in the era of Motown and the emerging disco scene nobody wanted to hear anti-establishment music from a trio of black youths, and they subsequently disbanded before recording an album. The film charts the story of how one of their dusty 1974 demos found an audience several generations younger and how a band called Death are finally receiving their long overdue recognition as true rock pioneers. Before and after the screening, DJ Rich Coyle will be playing a mix of punk and the music that influenced it, so you can carry on until late.
