A free half-day training course for anyone wanting to learn more about preparing materials for archiving comes to the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah RACE (Race Archives and Community Engagement) Centre at Manchester Central Library this month.
The course will be taking place on Thu 20 Feb, and is part of the 18-month Fumbo project — which means mystique or puzzle in Swahili — in which Amani Creatives CIC has been exploring African naming traditions.
The project is being carried out in partnership with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Museum in Kinshasa (DRC) and the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah RACE Centre in Manchester with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
As part of the project, 11 trained volunteers from the Greater Manchester African diaspora, have been interviewing people of Cameroonian, Eritrean, Congolese, Ethiopian, Zimbabwean, Nigerian, Malawian, South African, Ghanaian, Kenyan and Togolese heritage, to collect information to contribute to both a digital exhibition and a physical exhibition at Manchester Central Library, later this year.
Now the organisation is inviting additional volunteers to take part in a half-day session to learn and help with writing indices and summaries, preparing sensitivity reviews and using Audacity software to ready the collected material for public display.
The training will begin at 4pm and each participant will receive a small contribution towards transport costs and refreshments on the day.
