‘A Small Enclosed Room’ unpacks mental health, autism and masking at The Lowry

On Fri 11 – Sat 12 Oct, A Small Enclosed Room offers a moving and fiercely inventive meditation on neurodivergence, mental health and the ways in which we conceal ourselves with elaborate, artificial identities at The Lowry.

Hailed as ‘utterly fascinating and wildly creative’ (The Guardian) for his previous work, The Misfit Analysis, Cain Binchy brings his innovative and piercingly insightful new production to Salford with a captivating lead performance from Alphie Murphy.

While the beguiling figure initially bursts onto the stage as a guru, a rocker and an artist, A Small Enclosed Room embarks on a stirring journey of revelation and self-exploration to unearth the true identity behind the facade, excavating Alfie’s meticulously curated fictional characters in a darkly comic tale of desperate pretense, mental health, autism and fantasy.

Produced by Access All Areas – their first show since becoming a Lowry partner company – in collaboration with Shaun Dunne (How to tell a Secret(Netflix), Making a Mark) and Leah Moore (Good Omens(Bonus Content)), Binchy’s illuminating new show promises an ingenious take on the human reality behind inspirational personas and their life-changing motivational truths.
