Manchester School of Architecture has collaborated with Castlefield Gallery for an exhibition which opens later this month. Titled Undoing, it builds on the School’s research into the often-conflicted relationship between the past and present in architecture. It will include photography, sculpture, and films by several artists and architects. The aim is to explore how buildings, places, and artefacts are re-used and reinterpreted. Included are models of important lost buildings, including a representation of our own Hacienda nightclub, and of the hut where the philosopher Wittgenstein worked. Vision Machines is a series of photographs by Tom Dale of Polish houses which were built according to strict communist regulations, but have since been adapted by their owners. Larissa Sansour’s film In the Future, They Ate from the Finest Porcelain is a sci-fi narrative with live action and CGI. Using recycled materials, James Ackerley has created sculptures that serve as exhibition furniture, inviting visitors to sit or lean on them.
