In a clearing in an isolated forest, a man tries in vain to escape his ramshackle cabin through the use of a wooden balloon. No, this isn’t some fever dream; it’s the new solo exhibition from artist David Bethell at Home Manchester. Titled Fleeting Flights, it charts the story of a man’s struggle to escape his own self-induced purgatory. Staffordshire-based Bethell is known for his functional sculptures of machinery, and this mixed media exhibition includes many elaborate wooden contraptions designed and built by the artist. It also features the debut of a short film – Bethell’s first foray into using this medium along with his sculptural and performative pieces.
