Selfies get a dark facelift in a new exhibition by Swedish artist Pär Strömberg. ‘Those of the Unlight’ features portraits of women from the Scandinavian black metal scene, displaying their selfies as an upside-down cross. Strömberg, a four-time nominee for the Royal Dutch Painting Prize, takes his artistic tone from the music scene of his youth. The ‘Black Metal Girls’ – mainly women from catholic backgrounds – are presented in charcoal and watercolour, and will be accompanied by dramatic pagan icons depicting female role models as modern-day martyrs. Paper is a gallery dedicated to the medium of paper and is open to the public on Saturdays. The exhibition launches on Saturday 19 August, and is preceded by a private viewing on Thursday 17 August, 6-9pm.
