The thriving live literature scene in Manchester means one is never short of an event to sate your literary desires, and at the beating heart of this is heavyweights Bad Language. The last year has seen them burst out of the backroom of The Castle with big-name shows around the city – but they always return to their regular monthly night. The quality of the night has not gone unnoticed as they have just clinched the national Saboteur Award for Best Regular Spoken Word Night – a ceremony that also saw the next headliner Jo Bell (pictured), leader of poetry collective 52 and canal laureate, pick up a gong. This, coupled with a 50th birthday to celebrate (events, not years), will ensure plenty of good cheer from committed hosts Joe Daly and Fat Roland. With an open mic featuring the usual array of regular talent and brand new performers, Manchester’s literary lot are likely to be out in force to celebrate with a night known for its community spirit and high quality of acts, assuming they can all squeeze into the back room of The Castle Hotel. Here’s to the century!
