Fancy dinner and a movie for £8? Unbelievably, you can have it all at the Band on the Wall Film Club – located in the Band on the Wall annexe, aka The Picturehouse, which was one of Manchester’s very first cinemas. As such it’s a great place to explore the venue’s expanding programme of music films. This week’s screening is Oscar-winning documentary Twenty Feet From Stardom. The film explores the real-life stories of backing singers during the 20th Century. Never the Bob Marley, always the unknown, the backing singer’s life is one of highs and lows that are explored in detail, with guest appearances from the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger and Stevie Wonder. Singers whose lives are explored in this film include Darlene Love (who has worked with, among others, Sonny and Cher, and Dionne Warwick) and Merry Clayton, who sung on the Rolling Stones’ Gimme Shelter.

Tue 10 Feb, Band on the Wall, 25 Swan Street, Manchester M4 5JZ. Tel: 0161 834 1786, 7pm (screening starts 7.30pm), £8 (including a meal) www.bandonthewall.org
