This November, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra stages an evening of hypnotic beauty and driving energy with a programme of captivating symbiosis and reformation, as the world-renowned ensemble celebrates the mesmerising sound world of Steve Reich, alongside works by John Adams and Gabriella Smith.
Led by conductor, percussionist and pre-eminent champion of Reich’s oeuvre Colin Currie, the orchestra charts a shimmering voyage through the minimalist titan’s greatest compositions, beginning with the pivotal Variations for Winds, Strings and Keyboards, a boundary-shattering piece that blends his signature staccato repetitions with a glowing, fluid haze.
In the bold and expansive centrepiece, The Four Sections, the orchestra revisits one of Reich’s most ambitious arrangements with trademark power and precision, building a sweeping momentum in one continuous acceleration brimming with intricate layers and dazzling colour.
The programme also features John Adams’s Frenzy, a high-octane single-movement symphony filled with vivid transformations and exhilarating energy, alongside Gabriella Smith’s f(x)=sin²x–1/x, a strikingly original work whose title describes a curve mirrored in the music’s own shifting, unpredictable shapes.
