New Mills is hosting its annual festival this month – featuring over 50 artists in 48 venues. The Derbyshire town, just 20 minutes from Manchester by train, will ‘become an art gallery’ for two weeks (Fri 14 – Sun 30 Sep) as it welcomes artists from across the country. This year, the festival features New Mills Arts Trail, a contemporary trail that kicked off at the start of the year and will continue throughout the festival, showcasing artworks primarily in shop windows in the town. The town’s Grade II-listed building Torr Vale Mill will become part of the trail this year too, hosting Structure by contemporary sculptor and painter Jason Simpson. Trail organiser and artist Lyn Bannister will also present Other People’s Treasure (pictured), an exhibition examining other peoples’ memories, secrets and treasures, at St George’s Church. The festival features dozens of events, ranging from lantern-making workshops through to a poetry slam and Django Reinhardt-inspired jazz session – view the festival programme here.
