For all this month, the Greater Manchester Fringe has been entertaining audiences with stage shows at venues throughout the area. As the festival enters its final week, there are excellent events still to come. Three of the best are here outlined. ‘Twin Peaks’, at the Castle Hotel, is the debut solo show from stand-up comedian Mandy Tootill. Faced with her own mortality, she laughs in the cleavage of cancer. Full of oversharing and misbehaviour, this funny and poignant show has been a big hit with the critics. 53two presents ‘Passing On’, a play centred on Brian and Tom, a couple who want to have a child. A friend agrees to act as a surrogate, but when Tom finds out more about his biological parents, their dream of a family may turn into a nightmare. ‘Powerhouse Town’, also at 53two, sees six lives collide in a Northern betting shop. By closing time, one of the lives is snuffed out. Stephen Dodwell’s darkly comic political drama chronicles life against the odds.
