The Autumn season at Contact Theatre begins with the UK premiere of an innovative new play. We’re Not Really Here, which has a short run later this month, is a quote-unquote opera which aims to show what it’s like to be a die-hard football fan. The performance puts the audience centre stage – quite literally. The main theatre will be transformed into a stadium, where the viewers will be surrounded by terraces filled with a cast made up of a hundred real-life Manchester City fans. Over the 90-minute performance, the fans will re-enact a typical match day. You can experience the heartbreak and euphoria, but also quieter moments, where fans tell their personal stories. Don’t worry, you won’t hear the amateur cast trying to sing operatically; the only songs are football chants. The show has previously been performed with success in several countries around Europe, but this is the first time with such a high-profile club.
