When talking about novelists, painters, poets, filmmakers and the like  – it is not difficult to fall into the hole of using worn out superlatives. With incredibly prolific people like Malcolm Gladwell, though, it’s normal to use such clichéd language. This November the former writer for New Yorker and best-selling author behind six books, including 2000’s social analysis Tipping Point and 2005’s inspection of the impact of the unconscious Blink will be scheduling a trip to the Manchester Opera House, where he will be discussing his latest book Talking To Strangers. Gladwell has been praised consistently throughout his career for being a writer whose work shines a light on the human condition, exploring the human psyche through a series of unexpected twists and turns; and for being consistently engaging and gripping. He’s also the voice behind the popular Revisionist History podcast which looks to glean information and advice from the overlooked and misunderstood encounters of the everyday. The evening promises to be packed full of surprises, humour, and emotion as Gladwell discusses his new book which examines the way in which we interact with strangers whilst touching upon popular examples like the trial of Amanda Knox and the suicide of Sylvia Plath. So if you attend the event on your own you may leave with different assumptions about the very stranger you were awkwardly sitting next to. Plus, if you select the book-in-ticket option when buying your ticket you’ll receive a copy of Talking To Strangers at a discounted price, to be collected on the night.

Please Note: This event has now been cancelled.
