The UK premiere of a new contemporary dance double bill from Candoco Dance Company is coming to The Lowry this autumn. Award-winning choreographer Yasmeen Godder presents her newly commissioned work, Face In, set in a wild, fictional world, that feels uncomfortably familiar yet strangely distorted. Expressed through images interwoven with uninhibited dance performance, an atmospheric, urban indie soundtrack provided by live recordings of The Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble sets the scene. Candoco’s previous Artistic Co-Directors, Stine Nilsen and Pedro Machado, describe Godder’s work as pushing “beyond known ways of expressing ourselves, of interacting and physically relating to each other”. Expect a visceral exploration of physicality and identity from one of contemporary choreography’s leading lights. This new work is paired with Beheld by Sadler’s Wells New Wave Artist, Alexander Whitley. Striking duets and breath-taking ensemble dancing is set to a mesmerizing score from Nils Frahm, reworked by Machinefabriek’s Rutger Zuydervelt. Candoco Dance Company, founded in 1991, is comprised of disabled and non-disabled dancers. This UK premiere is the last offering from now-departed Artistic Co-Directors Stine Nilsen and Pedro Machado, who have previously staged performances at the Bird’s Nest in Beijing and at the 2012 Paralympic Closing Ceremony. A recent review in the Observer notes: ‘Candoco is the company for which choreographers reserve their wildest and often most inventive work’. A must-see for performance art and contemporary dance fans.
