Herk Harvey’s 1962 experimental horror film Carnival of Souls is stripped back to its raw bones as the ‘film’ takes place as a sound-only experience at Cornerhouse for a one-off screening in February. The screening uses headphones that give the impression of action taking place around the listener, lending an immersive edge to the experience. The spooky narrative explore the experiences of Mary, haunted by the memories of a recent car crash and moves to a new town to start again, but is increasingly drawn in her dreams to an abandoned dancehall and to the site of a long-closed carnival. The event also features the voices of Amanda Hennessy and Baby Dee – the latter of whom has previously collaborated with Mark Almond and Will Oldham.
