Celebrating the release of her critically acclaimed seventh record, Birth of Violence, Chelsea Wolfe brings her idiosyncratic blend of folk and gothic rock to the intimate setting of the Stoller Hall (part of Chetham’s School of Music) next March. With a more exclusive focus on a stripped-back, acoustic-led folk style than on her previous releases — which have incorporated elements of noise, doom and experimental metal — Birth of Violence was recorded at Wolfe’s home in Northern California and features entrancing, exploratory tracks peppered with moments of lush orchestration. While Wolfe’s lyrical themes tackle solemn contemporary issues such as mass shootings and climate change, this is never a purely gloomy affair; the tracks are complemented by notes of uplifting poignancy, as exemplified on the haunting-yet-beautiful lead single, The Mother Road. Joined on tour by longtime collaborator Ben Chisholm, who provides electronics and soundscapes, this show at Stoller Hall is the perfect chance to catch Chelsea Wolfe at the peak of her powers. Birth of Violence is available now via Sargent House.
