Toyah Willcox will revive Derek Jarman’s classic punk film Jubilee on the stage of the Royal Exchange. Jubilee, which famously attracted the ire of Vivienne Westwood on its release in 1978, features a marauding girl gang observed by a time-travelling Queen Elizabeth I. Willcox will play the magical monarch in this world premiere remix for the theatre, with the ensemble cast also including Shakespearean actor Lucy Ellinson and performance artist Travis Alabanza. Expect a bold red, white and blue stage set, a killer soundtrack and plenty of modern themes for 2017: culture wars, violence and the rise of the right. Jubilee is co-produced by director Chris Goode, creator of several Fringe First award-winning shows including the innovative child-scripted ‘Monkey Bars’.
