What would you take with you if you could start again from scratch? That’s the question DugOut Theatre’s hit show, Swansong, asks at the Lowry this May. The premise is a modern take on Noah’s Ark, with four strangers stranded in a swan-shaped pedalo after an apocalyptic storm. As if things weren’t difficult enough already, each of the four characters is remarkably different: competitive, upper class, hippyish, and nerdy. Yet as a group they represent humanity’s only hope for survival. Overcoming their differences, the group must work out how to begin again, as well as considering what they love about the world as they knew it and what we’d be better off leaving behind for good. Described by the Stage as ‘Theatrically watertight… character comedy, social satire and moral debate.’ this is a must-see event that’s both thought provoking and entertaining. Swansong also offers the chance to see one of the UK’s most exciting new theatre companies in action. DugOut was founded by a group of students in Leeds in 2009. Working primarily with improvisation techniques and new writing, the company have been described as ‘bristling with talent’.
