The Portico Library is an enigma right in the heart of the city and there is a free tour of the Library at the beginning of December. The host is Ed Glinert, a guide from New Manchester Walks and the author of the Penguin Manchester Compendium. Attendees will meet at The Bank Pub, with which the Portico shares a building, and the tour will begin with a short history of the old Georgian streets of the nearby Civic Quarter. Then it’s on to the Library itself for an in-depth look at its many collections of rare and influential books. You’ll also learn about some of the important figures who frequented the place throughout its 200-year history. Booking is required, and don’t delay, as these tours sell out quickly.

Fri 1 Dec, The Bank/Portico Library, Mosley Street, Manchester, M2 3FF, Tel: 0161 236 6785, 2.30pm – 3.30pm, FREE, www.eventbrite.co.uk/portico-library
