Just as Sky Ride lets the cyclists of the region take over the roads for one day a year, the Great Manchester Swim allows those in possession of a wetsuit have a go in the waterways without people thinking they’ve completely and utterly lost it – well, mostly. Taking place in Salford Quays, it offers a 40 minute swim (or the equivalent of 64 lengths of a 25m pool), going from ‘dock to dock’ as friends, family and general passers by cheer on. There are staggered starting times throughout the day, so those who’ve got to work in the morning can take their gear to work with them, pop on a tram and jump in for the late 3pm start. Swimmers of all abilities are welcome – though obviously, if you’re only just out of armbands or don’t feel confident anywhere where your feet can’t touch the bottom, it might be advisable if you stay dry this time round.

Sat 20 Jul, Salford Quays, Salford, 9am – 3pm (last swim starting time), £33, http://www.greatswim.org/
