With the vocal range of a soprano, it’s no surprise that Lykke Li’s delicate yet expansive expressions can send listeners into a deep and wonderful trance. Though born in Sweden, Li is desperate to shake off her geographical classification, and this fervour for independence seems to fuel her music. Her second album, Wounded Rhymes, was released in 2011 to critical acclaim, being featured on several Best Of lists (including Q, The Huffington Post and The New York Times) and she later collaborated with David Lynch on the polymath’s second studio album. She returns in support of her latest record, I Never Learn, perhaps her most ambitious to date. A theatrical record with themes of heartbreak, it uses swooping violins, trumpets and synths to arouse melancholy in the listener. But it’s not all doom and gloom, thanks to the irrepressible pop fun of her earlier work. A bit of a journey then.
