Fancy some urban exploring? The derelict Mayfield Depot is set for redevelopment, but in December you can explore its neglected past in a series of weekend tours. Author Jonathan Schofield will delve between the iron columns and crumbling bricks to tell a story of history, industry – and even zombie movie shoots thanks to the buildings’ cameo in 1970s Spanish horror ‘The Living Dead’. Hailed as “Manchester’s most spectacular abandoned building”, the Mayfield site was a pre-war railway station and, later, a parcel depot. Grub Food Fair can now be found underneath the Mayfield Arches, and the space is even becoming home to a community garden. Schofield’s tour will make the best of the venue’s civil engineering chic, leading you down its huge causeway up to the disused platforms. Sensible footwear is recommended, and your ticket includes a factsheet to take home.
