While Stretford’s beautiful art deco Essoldo cinema remains derelict, it has inspired one group to bring a new cinema experience to Stretford. The Spirit of the Essoldo will see a pop-up cinema take over the Mall’s multi-storey car park this March, with beautiful views over central and South Manchester. Spread across two Spring nights, guests can enjoy a DJ set and light show before settling in for a unique cinema experience. Friday 22 March will see a screening of Baz Luhrmann’s modern adaption of Romeo and Juliet, with Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2011 classic Drive on the bill for Saturday 23 March, and we’re told to be on the lookout for added immersive twists. Attendees can also look forward to a full bar and street food stalls, including Ginger’s Comfort ice cream, Get Chucked, and Vaso Kitchen Indian street food. The group plan to organise a range of
screenings throughout the summer across “a variety of stimulating
and challenging local locations”. Looks like they’re off to an amazing start.
