Over three nights in early July, the Royal Northern College of Music will present a special musical event at the Imperial War Museum North. After The Silence – Music in the Shadow of War is a commemoration of the outbreak of World War I a century ago. This audio-visual installation explores the soundscape of the conflict, to evoke the emotions of WWI soldiers and their families. Music by modern composers such as Eric Whitacre, Steve Reich and John Williams will help bring to life the suffering, but also the hope symbolised by the Christmas truce of 1914. In addition, several spaces throughout the museum will echo with contemporary reactions to the war by composers, including Shostakovich, Britten and Ravel. The event is part of IWM North’s Reactions 14, a season of creative responses to WWI.
