Setting out to challenge perceptions of ‘traditional folk’ music, London-based musician Sam Lee and his backing band visit Band on the Wall on Thursday 22 May. Lee’s debut album, Ground Of Its Own, was nominated for the 2012 Mercury Music Prize, and he returns this month with new EP More For To Rise – featuring Over Yonder Hills, below. Live, he is assisted by a group of ‘Friends’ that includes Japanese koto, cello and ukulele players – with Lee himself performing on jews harp and shruti box, as well as providing vocals. With home-made and mongrelised instrumentation on show, this show promises unconventional and contemporary arrangements of folk music.
