The latest production from What’s On Stage’s Best Theatre 2018, Hope Mill Theatre in Ancoats, is the the Northern Premiere of Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen’s The Exonerated, a play that tells the true stories of six innocent death row inmates in their own words. The performance, featuring film footage and live theatre, reimagines the death row drama in the style of the ever popular true crime TV shows. Since its original Off Broadway debut in 2002, The Exonerated has been made into a film starring Danny Glover and Susan Sarandon as well as having an extended London run but this is the first time the play will be seen in The North. Artistic Director Joseph Houston directs, knowing that Hope Mill is the ‘perfect venue for a ‘Netflix-style’ reimagining of The Exonerated’ in the wake of the popularity of Making A Murderer and The Staircase. A gripping drama that flits between monologue, courtroom, and prison, the true story of six people fighting for their innocence in a broken criminal system is possibly even more relevant now than at the turn of the century.
