Something spooky stirs in Salford as Conor McPherson’s Olivier award-winning play The Weir comes to The Lowry this January, following a successful UK-wide tour. Described as ‘gorgeously atmospheric’ by The Stage, the co-production between English Touring Theatre and Mercury Theatre Colchester celebrates 20 years since McPherson’s play first debuted in 1997 at the Royal Court. And what better way to spend a January evening than gathered around the hearth, listening to some sinister ghost stories in a rural Irish pub? Things aren’t quite what they seem, though, and what begins as light entertainment becomes something rather more chilling. As the whisky flows and the night wears on, one ghost story becomes more real than the others, revealing secrets from a young stranger’s past.
