¡Viva!, the UK’s largest festival dedicated to all things Spanish and Latin American celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2019. Launching later this month at Home, the festival includes screenings of 21 movies, including nine UK premieres. Opening the event is the premiere of ‘Tiempo después‘ (‘Some Time After’). Packed with satire and Python-esque humour, it kicks off the theme for this year’s festival, ‘Serious Fun’,  inspired by the cultural tradition of Esperpento, which uses dark humour to skewer contemporary society. The screening is followed by a free birthday party in the Home bar. Female talent features strongly across the programme, with 19 of the films having women in the roles of director, writer, producer, or star. It’s not all about film; in Theatre 1, there will be the play Kingdom, which uses the story of King Kong to bring the history of capitalism and bananas together. Also on stage is a special up-close performance, in association with Manchester Camerata, with violin soloist Francesca Dego.
