Famously being the film to launch actor Richard E. Grant’s subsequently long-standing career in the movies, cult British comedy Withnail and I is also memorable for the fantastic performances of Paul McGann (who stars alongside Grant’s Withnail as the titular ‘I’) and the late, great Richard Griffiths, playing the flamboyant Uncle Monty. Sadly it’s now also notorious for the associated drinking game (in which viewers attempt to match the alcoholic Withnail drink-for-drink throughout the film – not advisable!). This September, Stockport’s Plaza cinema host what will hopefully be a somewhat more civilised screening of this classic film. Escaping their dingy flat in Camden for a trip to the countryside, struggling actors Withnail and I soon find that the great British outdoors is less idyllic than they’d hoped. Also celebrated for its incredibly witty and oft-quoted dialogue, passionate fans will no doubt be seen mouthing along to some of the most memorable lines. Chin-chin!
