In a topical choice, HOME Manchester is putting on the first revival of Martin Sherman’s Rose since its 1999 premiere at The National Theatre. The play focuses on the titular character Rose, an 80-year-old woman whose life traces the fate of European Jews from the Second World War through to the start of the current millennium. As well as the displacement of Jews during the war, the play deals with situations in Palestine, America and, ultimately, Israel. As the world faces growing refugee crises and the USA becomes a place potentially less welcoming of the displaced, this play’s revival may be timely. Directed by Richard Beechman, Rose stars Oscar nominee Janet Suzman in a rare stage appearance. Previews from May 25.
