Dubbed “one of Chicago’s most versatile and in demand drummers” by the Chicago Reader, drummer and producer Makaya McCraven is no stranger to such praise. Son of drummer Stephen McCraven and Hungarian folk singer Agnes Zsigmondi, the Chicago-based musician is a true improviser of jazz and hip hop, continuously dipping into an eclectic range of genres. Best heard in the live environment, we’re lucky enough to have him bring his brilliant set to Band On The Wall this month on a short tour across Europe. The beat scientist’s latest release – double album ‘Universal Beings’ – has been met with wide acclaim praising his hypnotic, polyphonic beat work built up from live recordings and lovingly spliced together. Expect the drummer to be at his technical best, laying down precise grooves and exploring free jazz and hip hop with his supremely talented live band. Support comes from Idle Moments’ DJ Pablo.
