Born in the sweaty basement of Manchester’s much missed Roadhouse bar at the height of house superclubs, the Electric Chair rode a singular wave of underground dance music until it closed in 2008. Club founders, Luke Cowdrey and Justin Crawford, went on to open acclaimed bars such as Electrik in Chorlton and Didsbury’s Volta, as well as setting up their own successful music festival called Electric Elephant (the next one is 7-16 July, 2016 in Croatia). These days, the duo are as likely to crop up in broadsheet food supplements as they are clubbing guides – however, their annual ‘day after boxing day’ End of Year Riot club night continues to thrive. The team are celebrating 20 years of Electric Chair this year, and guests take in talent that reflects the club’s broad church of basement soul music. UK soul music originators Greg Wilson, Nightmares on Wax and Winston Hazel spin alongside European house heavyweights Prosumer and Alex Jazzanova. Other highlights include catch Manc rave upstart Ruf Dug or a super-rare set from Italian cosmic disco icon, Danielle Baldelli. As usual, this will sell out, so don’t sleep.
