Essex-born balladeer John Smith brings his collection of rootsy folk songwriting to the Royal Exchange Theatre this week, supporting latest record Hummingbird. Smith has seen off five albums in his relatively short career, quickly breaking 10 million streams on Spotify since the release of his debut LP The Fox and the Monk in 2006. His honest vocals and innovative guitar techniques echo the songwriting of the likes of Iron & Wine and John Martyn, combining original songwriting with traditionally formed folk. Latest record Hummingbird has only added to his credentials as one of the finest musicians on the contemporary folk scene, now backed up with an extensive European tour before heading Stateside, with a devoted fan base on both sides of the Atlantic. A regular on the live circuit, the folk songsmith has played a number of festivals and prestigious venues across the globe, adding our own Royal Exchange Theatre to the list this Sunday.
