Acclaimed production company, Opera North, presents a trio of dark fairy tales at the Lowry this March. First to open is a contemporary version of Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel. Director Edward Dick employs handheld cameras and live video to add a new element to the narrative of two children lost in the woods. Rossini’s Cinderella is next up, with director Aletta Collins taking the reins to deliver a comedic production. John Fulljames directs Rimsky-Korsakov’s rarely-performed The Snow Maiden to complete the trio. Staged professionally for the first time in the UK for over 60 years, the classic Russian folk story is about a young women whose heart will melt if she falls in love. This production has been reworked into a modern production which seeks to blur boundaries between reality and fantasy – as all good fairytales should.
