Artists descend on one of Manchester’s largest surviving cotton mills, Talbot Mill, to revive the spirit of The Great Exhibition of 1851 as part of Manchester Science Festival. Starting on Friday 27 October and entitled ‘A Grand Exposition’, the weekend-long event sees the worlds of art, science and technology collide in a grand expo. The event includes artwork created by brainwaves, a dancer controlled by social media, and a self-portrait made from an artist’s personal microbes. There are family-friendly activities to get stuck into as well with craft workshops – some bookable, some just drop-in – and a Steampunk Market packed with collectable contraptions. Daytime events are free, and tickets are available for the evening entertainment. ‘Illuminated Talks’ will kick things off every night at 7pm. Then enjoy ‘Expotronic’ with Test Dept’s Prolekult on the Friday, Spaceheads and avant-musical talent, Paddy Steer heading ‘A Grand Night Out’ on the Saturday, and a Sunday cabaret with Kino Film Club, Sam Illingworth and more. Friday and Saturday ticket-holders get a free drink – and look out for beer tasting sessions too.
