The Ocean Film Festival returns to the Plaza Cinema, Stockport this October showcasing seven diverse, short films about the sea. Expect impressive cinematography depicting the murky depths, marine creatures, and the people who devote their lives to the aquatic world. Sea Gypsies focuses on a group of free-spirited sailors with no permits or budget. They leave New Zealand to sail the 8000 miles to Patagonia – via Antarctica – during the iciest winter on record. In Whale Chasers, an unusual group, also from New Zealand, keep watch for migrating humpbacks, to study how the numbers have increased since whaling was banned. They are uniquely skilled in this task because they were all formerly whalers themselves. Fishpeople tells the stories of different types of folk whose lives have been shaped by the sea – from surfers and spear fishers to disadvantaged kids.
